Monday

A sacred graffiti…rangoli, an art among India women, is a pattern sprinkled daily at sunrise unto the ground in front of the gate to a house – sealing it with protection. A sort of labyrinth of knots, an entanglement whose purpose is to trap an evil spirit which might try to enter the house…armorplated lines of faith.

DO the knots that save

Men have tied knots since prehistoric times, using vines before the ropes of the era of sailing ships. Transforming a single piece of string into a functional tool to produce strength, reinforcing or creating an ease of untying after serving its purpose. Its as important to know the characteristics of various kinds of knots and their purposes for which they are best suited as how to tie them. Especially for the high-risk trades and professions such as steeplejacks and mountaineers. Knots are essential in many industrial, work, home or recreational activities. Truckers needing to tie down a load may use a trucker &apos s hitch, gaining mechanical advantage. Knots can save the spelunker from foolishly becoming buried under millions of tons of rock. Whether water sailing, cliff-side rock-climbing, well-tested knots apply bringing a critical measure of safety. At the other side of the spectrum, there are knots that save textiles. They are used to repair damage. Macrame, one kind of textile, is generated exclusively through the use of knotting, instead of knits, crochets, weaves or felting.

Knots played a key role as early humans learned to apply symbolism. Knots gained the power to save, to protect, on an invisible level. Knots were believed to hold an influence over the things they represent. Early sailors tied knots to symbolize binding the wind within them, and untying them was believed to release the wind. Similar beliefs were held for illness, love, friendship, and political unities. Healers attempted to bind someone &apos s illness within knots, and then release it harmlessly elsewhere.1 The Celtic Knot, first known to have been used by the Celts, with its continual looping suggests themes of eternity and interconnectedness, and knots may have been made at one time to foil evil spirits, and some as magical talismans for protection. The Mystic Knot is a Feng Shui cure for continuous good fortune. The special coin entwined to this knot is a symbol of a strong and happy partnership blessed with prosperity and success. With the Chinese knot, it has now become a type of elegant and colorful craft, removed from its original practical use, as is with many knots that have become purely decorative.
